A cup full of advice
A social design linking to different groups. In this case young adults and elderly people. This project inspired me to make a medium to pass along advice from seniors to young adults, to show their wisdom.
Elderly people are being put in retirement homes and are being forgotten. Something that does not sit right with me. I believe they can bring a lot of value to the table, we truly underestimate them. They have had full lives with so many lessons. The goal of this project was to show young adults the value that seniors can provide.
Every Sunday I used to visit my Dutch grandparents. A day where family would come together. My grandpa would put some classical music on in the background. The smell of coffee would fill up the kitchen. English tea, decaf coffee and biscuits were being served. Advice was being shared.
I used cups as the medium. It only seemed right to use such an intimate object (with emotional value) for this project. Using a hand-made form I went by a retirement home and collected advice from Joop, Tineke and Nelly. In the form I also asked them what designs they would like on the cup. This collaboration resulted in two handmade cups with designs and advice from the seniors.
This cup was co-designed with Tineke.
“Blijf eerlijk dan kom je het verst” translating to: “Stay honest, that will get you the furthest”. This cup was co-designed with Nelly and Joop.
“Durf verder te kijken” translating to: “Dare to look beyond.”
“Ga tot de bodem” litteraly translating to: “Go till the bottom” meaning: “Go all out”
Joop has very bad eye sight. Therefore he told me to make a mark on the inside so that he can see till where he has to pour. He also told me to make the handle red so that he can easily see where he can hold the cup.
With this form I went by the retirement home. There I had lovely conversations with Joop, Tineke and Nelly. Elders all above the age of 93. Together we filled out the form so I could start bringing thair vision to life. Afterwards I went by to show them the result.
